There is paucity of information on chronic respiratory illnesses not only locally, but also internationally. A national database for chronic respiratory diseases helps to satisfy the hunger of the scientific and medical community, and other stakeholders for such information. The creation of a national chest registry is necessary to determine the burden of chronic respiratory diseases more accurately, to elucidate the patient demographics and treatment characteristics, to study the healthcare access and availability; and to study the cost effectiveness of the various treatments. Chronic respiratory diseases not only reduce the life expectancy, they also impact negatively on the quality of life, increase health care utilization, and impose a social and economic burden on the family members of sufferers.
